Deep Sky Astrophotography & Processing, with Larry Bedigan

Posted on Thursday, February 13, 2020

It’s my pleasure to introduce a new guest trainer, Larry Bedigan.  In addition to being a really good landscape photographer, Larry is also an accomplished astrophotographer and astronomer.  You may have seen some of his night landscapes from Tanzania or his shot of the Orion Nebula in our Facebook group.

The workshop will include demonstations of equipment setups for deep sky astrophotography, including a portable star tracker with a DSLR, and a telescope/mount.  Larry will also discuss some of his post-processing methods.

The event will take place in the education centre at Harehope Quarry, on the outskirts of Frosterley.  It’s a dark sky site, with a classroom and other indoor amenities.

You don’t have to own all the necessary equipment to take part, but if you own a tracking mount you’ll be able to learn how to set up and use it.  The minimum you need to have with you is a camera (DSLR or mirrorless) and a tripod.

Previous knowledge/experience of astrophotography and astronomy is not essential.  We’ll support you from where you are at the moment, in taking things to the next level.

The workshop is timed for a Moonless night, for maximum darkness.

Numbers are restricted to 15 photographers.  Please note that in order to keep prices down, bookings are non-refundable if you’re unable to come (but it may possible to transfer it to someone else, upon request).

In terms of weather, if the BBC forecast is predicting heavy rain, with a 50% chance or greater – or winds over 30mph, or Clear Outside is predicting a 75% or greater cloud cover, you’ll be given the chance to move your booking to another workshop, or will be offered a voucher for a different event.  I’ll make this decision two days before.

Those criteria should give us a good chance of getting the right conditions, however, by booking for the workshop, you’re confirming you understand there’s always a chance of partial or total cloud cover, in which case we’ll get shots when we can, and will do some theory and editing at other times.

Joining instructions will be sent to everyone around two days before the event.
